Every August 15 the anniversary of the Arequipa Foundation is commemorated; a special date for all the inhabitants of this Peruvian city who celebrate in style. Here we tell you more about its history.
History of the Arequipa Foundation
On August 15, but in the year 1540, the Foundation of Arequipa was carried out , although at that time it was known under the name of "Villa Hermosa de Nuestra Señora de Asunta". This foundation was made in the name of the Marquis Don Francisco Pizarro and on September 22, 1541, King Carlos V, through a Royal Certificate, ordered that it be called the City of Arequipa.
Quickly, this city acquired great importance for the viceroyalty, so much so that it was recognized by the Spanish crown with the titles of "Very Noble and Very Loyal", and also that of "Fidelísima".
Later, during the republican period of Peru , Arequipa was declared "Capital of the Republic", during the government of Lizardo Montero. This city has been the focus of popular, civic and democratic rebellions, but it has also been the cradle of great intellectual, political and religious figures in the country.
In this way, every August 15 the Arequipa Foundation is celebrated in style, which begins several days before and lasts for almost a month. At this time, many activities take place, such as the popular parades that crosses the entire Corso de la Amistad, and where more than 4 thousand people gather to commemorate the anniversary of the Foundation of Arequipa.
