Why is Andean Song Day celebrated in Peru

Every year, on June 15 , the Andean Song Day is celebrated throughout Peru ; a special date that aims to recognize Andean folk songs as a symbol of national identity. This holiday was established in 2006 by the president of that time. You want to know why? Coming up next, we tell you.

How was the Andean Song Day born in Peru?

The Day of the Andean Song was born in 2006 through a decree signed by the then President of the Republic, Alejandro Toledo. This date was established, among other things, at the request of prominent Andean singers such as Amanda Portales, better known as "The Bride of Peru."

This decree talks about the importance of the Andean song for the country. Referring to it as "the most genuine, ancestral, traditional and predominant of anonymous and testimonial wealth that the Andean peoples have bequeathed to generations."

The date of June 15 was chosen to celebrate the Day of the Andean Song because from this date the high Andean peoples through offerings, rituals and sacrifices begin their festivities in honor of the earth and the sun.

Thus, the Day of the Andean Song is the prelude to the feast of the Day of the Peasant, on June 24, the day on which they finish honoring the earth and the sun. Among all the variants of the Andean song, the genres wifala, kashua, chuta chutay and huayno stand out.
