History and origin of the Day of the Psychologist in Peru

The Day of the Psychologist in Peru is celebrated every April 30 ; a commemorative date that seeks to pay tribute to all these Peruvian professionals who look after the public and mental health of all citizens of the country. They also perform fundamental tasks in the development of institutions and all people.

How was the Day of the Psychologist born in Peru?

The Peruvian Psychologist's Day was born on April 30, 1980 when the Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces created, by decree, the College of Psychologist of Peru , taking this same date to celebrate each year the Day of the Psychologist , in commemoration of the foundation of this institution and as a tribute to all professionals in the country.

However, despite the fact that the creation of the College of Psychologists of Peru and the Day of the Psychologist is recent, the history of psychology in our country dates back several centuries. This is known thanks to the psychiatrist Hermilio Valdizán, who in his book "Paleopsychiatry in ancient Peru" tells of the worldview that these pre-Columbian settlers had on the conceptualization and treatment of mental illnesses. This shows that this profession in Peru is rooted in our origins.

In these times of the Covid-19 pandemic, psychologists are more important than ever for that reason, therefore, from here we extend a greeting to all these professionals who carry out a commendable and noble work for the development of Peru . Happy Psychologist's Day!
